Distinguish Sounds: Absorption vs. Insulation

In architectural acoustics, treating noise requires distinguishing between blocking sound (insulation) and conditioning sound (absorption). Our Perforated Calcium Silicate Panels are engineered specifically for Sound Absorption, utilizing the Helmholtz Resonance principle. When sound waves pass through the engineered perforations into the backed air cavity, the acoustic energy creates friction and is dissipated as heat, dramatically reducing room reverberation (echo).
| Feature | Sound Absorption (Our Perforated Panels) | Sound Insulation (Solid Barriers) |
|---|---|---|
| Working Principle | Converts acoustic energy into heat | Blocks sound wave transmission |
| Core Metric | NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) ≥ 0.75 | STC (Sound Transmission Class) ≥ 50 |
| Material Density | Typically < 100 kg/m³ (in the acoustic cavity) | Typically > 60 kg/m³ (high-density mass) |
| Structural Trait | Porous, perforated, air-permeable | Solid, high-density, airtight |
| Primary Function | Reduces internal echo and reverberation | Prevents noise from entering/leaving a room |

Why Calcium Silicate?
While perforated gypsum is commonly used for basic acoustic ceilings, it often fails in demanding commercial environments. We utilize high-density Calcium Silicate and Fiber Cement as our premium substrates. Here is how they perform under commercial building standards:
| Performance Metric | Perforated Calcium Silicate (Our Core Choice) | Standard Perforated Gypsum Board | Perforated Fiber Cement (Heavy Duty) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moisture Resistance | Excellent (No sagging in humid conditions) | Poor (Prone to swelling and sagging) | Excellent (Water-resistant) |
| Fire Classification | Class A1 (Non-combustible) | Class A1 | Class A1 (Non-combustible) |
| Mold & Pest Resistance | High (Alkaline nature prevents mold) | Low (Paper face attracts moisture/mold) | High |
| Flexural Strength | Medium-High (Durable against impact) | Low (Fragile, cracks easily) | High (Heavy impact resistance) |
| Weight (12mm panel) | ~ 11 kg/m² | ~ 9.5 kg/m² | ~ 14 kg/m² |
| Ideal Scenarios | Commercial ceilings, humid areas, hospitals | Dry indoor areas, temporary structures | Swimming pools, semi-outdoors, basements |

Decoding Perforation Rates
The perforation rate (open area percentage) is the core “control valve” for sound absorption. We offer precisely engineered perforation patterns to target specific noise frequencies, ensuring optimal acoustic conditioning for your exact project needs.
| Perforation Rate | Target Noise Frequency | Acoustic Mechanism | Ideal Application Scenarios |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low (5% – 10%) | Low-Frequency Noise (Machinery, rumble) | Higher acoustic resistance lowers the resonance peak. | Generator rooms, industrial facilities, equipment enclosures. |
| Medium (10% – 15%) | Mid-Frequency Noise (Human voice, daily activities) | Balanced energy dissipation across the vocal spectrum. | Office corridors, classrooms, conference rooms, hospitals. |
| High (15% – 20%) | High-Frequency Noise (HVAC fans, traffic, sharp echoes) | Shifts resonance peak higher for maximum wave capture. | Open-plan offices, gymnasiums, street-facing venues, lecture halls. |

Installation Guidelines & Best Practices
Proper installation is critical to both structural safety and maximum acoustic performance. Our perforated calcium silicate panels are designed for standard lightweight steel framing systems, offering high workability for on-site modifications.
1. Framing & Grid Preparation:
Ensure rigorous leveling and spacing.
Install the primary structural grid (main keels) and secondary furring channels (sub-keels). Ensure the sub-keel spacing exactly matches the panel dimensions (typically 400mm or 600mm centers). The grid must be thoroughly leveled and cleaned before panel application.

2. Cavity Infill (Optional):
Critical for mid-to-high frequency absorption.
If the acoustic design requires it, insert acoustic fiberglass or rock wool (e.g., 50kg/m³) into the plenum space above the grid. Ensure the insulation does not physically press down heavily on the back of the perforated panels.
3. Panel Cutting & Orientation:
A staggered joint layout is required.
Measure and cut panels using a circular saw with a carbide-tipped blade. The long edge of the panel must be installed perpendicular to the sub-keels. The short edges must be installed in a staggered (brick-bond) pattern to distribute structural stress evenly.
4. Fastening & Fixing:
Controlled screw depth is essential.
Fix the panels to the metal furring using fine-thread, bugle-head (countersunk) self-tapping screws. Screws must be driven strictly perpendicular to the panel face.
5. Jointing & Detailing:
Preventing sound leakage.
Leave a designated expansion gap between panels. Fill the gaps with compatible jointing compound or acoustic sealant. Any cutouts for lighting fixtures, HVAC grilles, or pipes must be fully sealed around the edges to prevent sound transmission leaks.
Critical Installation Tolerances
| Metric / Parameter | Recommended Specification | Reason for Tolerance |
|---|---|---|
| Screw Spacing | ≤ 200 mm | Prevents panel sagging and ensures uniform load distribution. |
| Screw Edge Distance | 10 mm – 15 mm from panel edge | Prevents edge cracking or breakout during drilling. |
| Screw Sinking Depth | 0.5 mm – 1.0 mm below surface | Allows for smooth putty finishing without compromising the board’s structural core. |
| Panel Expansion Gap | 3.0 mm – 5.0 mm | Accommodates minor thermal expansion and building movement. |
