Material Definition and Cladding Comparison
Fiber Cement Board Siding is a high-density, inorganic composite material made from cement, quartz sand, and cellulose fibers, cured under high temperature and pressure (autoclaving). It is designed to replace traditional exterior cladding materials by offering superior fire resistance and weather endurance without the high maintenance costs.

| Cladding Material | Fire Rating | Weather Resistance | Maintenance Requirement | Structural Load |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiber Cement Siding | Class A1 (Non-combustible) | Excellent (Resists rot, UV, and freezing) | Low (Wipe or wash) | Moderate to Heavy |
| Wood Cladding | Class B/C (Combustible) | Poor (Prone to rot and termites) | High (Needs frequent repainting) | Light |
| Vinyl (PVC) Siding | Class B1 (Melts/Releases toxic gas) | Moderate (Becomes brittle in cold) | Low | Very Light |
| Stucco / Render | Class A1 (Non-combustible) | Moderate (Prone to surface cracking) | High (Requires patching) | Heavy |
| Aluminum Composite (ACP) | Varies (Standard ACP is combustible) | Good (Prone to denting) | Low | Light |

Architectural Finishes and Aesthetics
High-density exterior cladding does not mean compromising on architectural vision. Oguards Fiber Cement Siding is available in a wide spectrum of factory-finished textures and through-colored options, allowing architects to achieve high-end facades while maintaining Class A1 fire safety.

- Through-Colored Raw Cement: Provides the authentic, brutalist aesthetic of exposed concrete. The color runs through the entire thickness of the board, ensuring minor surface scratches remain invisible.
- Architectural Coating: Finished with ultra-weather-resistant UV or PVDF paints, available in any custom RAL color. These vibrant, glossy, or matte finishes resist fading and chalking even after years of UV exposure.
- Natural Wood Grains: Deeply embossed textures that mimic the warmth and grain of natural timber, delivering a premium residential or resort aesthetic without the rot, termite risk, or fire hazard of real wood.
- Stone & Groove Textures: Replicates the premium look of cut stone, split-face rock, or grooved architectural lines, offering a lightweight alternative to heavy masonry.
Density Requirements for Exterior Panels
Not all fiber cement boards are suitable for exteriors. For outdoor curtain walls facing high wind loads and severe weather, Oguards strictly manufactures High-Density Panels (≥ 1.50 g/cm³) compressed using a 5000-ton hydraulic press.
| Density Grade | Specific Gravity | Application | Suitability for Exterior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low Density | 0.9 – 1.2 g/cm³ | Interior ceilings, drywalls | ❌ Fails under wind/rain |
| Medium Density | 1.2 – 1.5 g/cm³ | Semi-exposed indoor zones | ❌ High risk of warping |
| High Density (Pressed) | ≥ 1.5 g/cm³ | High-rise curtain walls | ✅ Mandatory standard |

Facade Installation Systems
Our high-density boards support three standard architectural installation methods based on panel thickness and the required visual finish.
- Exposed Fastener System: Panels (8mm–12mm thick) are secured to the metal framework using stainless steel rivets or screws. Fasteners must be driven at least 15mm from the board’s edge to prevent cracking.
- Concealed Undercut Anchor System: For seamless commercial facades. Thicker panels (12mm–20mm) are pre-drilled on the back for undercut anchors, locking into an aluminum sub-frame without exposing screws on the surface.
- Lap Siding System: Typically used in residential projects. Narrow planks (e.g., 190mm wide) are installed horizontally with overlapping edges, mimicking traditional timber cladding.
Rainscreen Principle and Drainage Design
Exterior cladding must actively manage moisture. Oguards mandates installing our exterior panels using the Ventilated Rainscreen Principle.

By creating a continuous air cavity between the fiber cement panel and the building’s structural wall (or insulation layer), the system functions in two ways:
- Moisture Drainage: Driven rain that enters through the 8mm–15mm open panel joints is immediately drained downward through the air cavity.
- Pressure Equalization: The ventilated gap equalizes air pressure on both sides of the panel, preventing wind from sucking water into the building envelope and allowing the structure to “breathe”.
Common Facade Failures and Prevention
Proper installation is as critical as material quality. Avoiding common exterior cladding failures requires strict adherence to fabrication and sealing guidelines.
| Common Failure | Primary Cause | Oguards Engineering Prevention Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Efflorescence | Alkaline salts dissolving in trapped moisture | Ensure proper rainscreen drainage. Treat all six sides of the panel (including cut edges) with a waterproof sealant before installation. |
| Edge Cracking | Stress concentration from improper fastening | Always pre-drill pilot holes. Fasteners must be driven at least 15mm from the board edge. Use a torque wrench (8-10 N·m) to prevent over-tightening. |
| Sealant Failure | Using rigid or incompatible caulking | Use high-quality, neutral-curing silicone weather sealants. Maintain a joint width-to-depth ratio of 2:1, utilizing foam backer rods. |
Technical Specifications (Exterior Grade)
